There's nothing like an adobe home.

Your building material matters. Our adobes are made by hand and with care, on the same yard that’s been making them for more than fifty years.

How we make our adobes

Our adobes are made the old fashioned way. We start with locally sourced material - carefully mixed until it has the right ratio of clay and dirt. We add water, stabilizer when needed and a little straw, then turn the mixture until it is ready to pour. The mixture is poured onto forms custom crafted to make the perfect adobe and hand pulled until the mixture is smooth across the top.

The forms are removed and the adobes then bake under the New Mexico sun until they are ready to be turned, scraped, loaded onto pallets and sent off to your project.

Our adobes are made on the same ground where NM Earth Adobes produced millions of adobes over more than five decades. We were lucky to be trained by the team behind NM Earth, and are proud to follow their same careful and time honed production practices.

If you're lucky you might find a bird or coyote print in our adobes. Don't worry, the prints don't impact the compressive strength, but they do give your blocks character and a sense of place you can't get with any other material.

How many blocks do you need?

Our estimator turns your wall length and height into a block count and material cost, using the same face-size and waste-buffer math we use on real orders. Enter your dimensions below to get a number, or skip straight to placing an order if you already know your quantity.

The combined length of every wall in your project, measured along the ground, not counting height.

This isn't a final order - we'll follow up by email to confirm the details before anything is booked.

Planning estimate only. Wall thickness, lintels, openings, and mortar joints change your actual count.

Who we are

Phoebe and Virgil are adobe enthusiasts and co-owners of The Adobe Yard. They are passionate about ensuring the future of adobe, and are always eager to hear about your adobe project or discuss partnership opportunities. When they aren't working at the yard, they can be found hiking, thrift shopping, or spending time with their neighbors and friends (shoutout to Jefferson St). During the adobe offseason, Phoebe and Virgil spend time abroad working on international adobe building projects and connecting with other yard owners.

Have a project you're interested in partnering on? We'd love to talk. Reach out to us here.

Why we love adobe

There are so many reasons to love adobe, see a few of our favorites below. Want to learn more about adobe and whether it is the right material for your project? Reach out here and we'd be happy to share more.

Naturally unique

By the nature of how they are made our adobes are uniform, yet no two are exactly the same. Other materials may try to imitate adobe, but they can never match it. You know a true adobe wall when you see one.

As sustainable as it gets

You can't find a material much more sustainable than our adobes. We source our dirt locally, and while bricks and similar materials burn energy to fire, adobes dry using nothing but the power of the sun - one of the most sustainable building materials money can buy.

Excellent temperature control

Adobes have natural thermal mass, meaning they absorb heat during the day and release it at night, keeping your home cool during the day and warm at night. Due to this special property, adobe homeowners enjoy lower utility bills, and some choose to forego HVAC systems entirely.

Time tested strength

Our adobes meet New Mexico Earthen Building Code strength requirements, and we QA test every batch. Adobe is also the original building material of the Southwest - homes built centuries ago are still standing today. When you build with adobe, you're investing in a home that will last for generations.
